It all started when…

…re-search became re-enkindle(d)

Whilst working as an On-call firefighter in four Fire and Rescue Services (FRSs) throughout England Dr Steve Sadler experienced first hand the perennial problem of On-call fire engine (un)availability. He also saw how multifaceted the challenge was; a combination of factors including a challenging backdrop for recruitment, poor retention rates, and a unique workforce in which strategic workforce planning often failed to ensure the right OCFFs with the right skills were in the right place at the right times.

Steve decided to combine his interdisciplinary research expertise with fire service experience whilst working as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at Keele University. He developed the UK’s first research-led model of good practice for the availability of On-call fire engines - to improve the availability of On-call fire engines.

On a Mission

Steve has since become known for his On-call expertise. His depth of knowledge, and ability to clarify ambiguities inherent to the complexities of the On-landscape using research data has made him trusted by leaders across the Sector. Steve helps them navigate the future and take their own teams with them by making their evidence-based decisions easier and can help you too - Let’s Talk.

To support the sector, and increase its capacity for evidence-based, data-driven solutions, research has now become re-enkindle. Academic, interdisciplinary research expertise and know-how allied to FRS experience has led to the refinement of research, data tools, and methodologies to help FRSs improve their understanding of on-call provisions and augment the availability of on-call fire engines.

re-enkindle supports services across the sector in their aspirations to embed best practice, affect meaningful change, and create impact.
